What is an Iyengar Yoga class like?
In Iyengar Yoga, the poses are introduced gradually and systematically. Expect teachers to demonstrate each pose, give individual instructions and corrections, and if appropriate, insert the use of props (blocks, belts, blankets, chairs) to assist you in getting maximum benefit from each pose.
How often should I come for class?
First try 1 class per week. Practice a few poses at home and then come for class again the following week. If at that point you feel ready to add an additional class per week, go for it!
What should I wear for class?
Shorts or tights and a modest T-shirt is best. When teachers can easily see the shape of your feet and legs, they can keep you safe in the practice. Please don’t chew gum in class and because some students are environmentally sensitive, avoid perfumes, scented soaps, and creams.
Do I need to bring my own mat?
We supply all of the equipment you may need during your class, mats included. All equipment used during class is provided free of charge.
What level class should I attend?
- Students without prior yoga experience should register for our Foundations program.
- Students who cannot do Sirsasana should attend Level 1.
- Students who are learning Sirsasana should attend Level 2.
- Students who are adept in Sirsasana should attend Level 3.
It’s a good idea to meet briefly with a teacher and discuss the level most-appropriate for you.
Do you supply water?
There’s a water fountain available on site. Please do not bring water bottles into the practice rooms.
How do I register for my first class?
Please arrive 15 minutes early for your first class. This will give you time to fill out our health history form and register yourself at the front desk. Payment can be made at that time. It is unnecessary to register days in advance.
Can I do one class to see if I like it?
To know if Iyengar Yoga is for you, it’s best to attend a few classes. Our Foundations program is designed to give you a solid introduction. It is a 6 class program and you are welcome to register for the whole program or 3 classes at a time. If you are already an Iyengar Yoga student (Level 1 or above), you have the option to pay the drop-in fee for a single class.
Will it Improve my cardiovascular fitness?
Yes. In Level 1 and Level 2, inverted poses, strenuous standing poses and vigorous routines improve the cardiovascular system.
Am I too stiff to do yoga?
No one is too stiff to do yoga. The use of props and the teacher’s attention to detail ensure that students are working correctly at their level. For example, if you can’t reach the floor, then wooden blocks are inserted so that you can participate in every pose.
